Spruce Root and Cedar
During a stop-over in Prince Rupert, we ducked in out of the rain to visit the Museum of Northern British Columbia, which is situated in a beautiful longhouse and which holds a fantastic collection of spruce root baskets, shamanic artifacts and First Nations art. I was particularly taken with this medicine box charm made of bent cedar (sorry, no camera) and a fantastic raven mask. There seems to be a real emphasis on the value of seeing and hearing among the Tsimshian people, which is why their ceremonial masks have eyes that open and shut…as an encouragement to look beyond the material. Much food for thought.
